UV radiation in combination with Riboflavin initiates molecular cross-linking of corneal collagen. Thus progressive corneal thinning is slowed down or even stopped. Biomechanical strength of corneal tissue is improved.

A number of clinical studies have demonstrated that progressive keratokonus and iatrogenic ectasia can be stabilized by corneal cross-linking.

72-months follow-up data has not shown any decrease of biomechanical corneal stability. More than 50 % of all patients showed a reduction of maximal keratometry. No adverse effects were observed either.

The UV-X ™ System was developed by Theo Seiler, MD and Eberhard Spoerl, PhD (Zuerich / Dresden). It consists of a radiator which emits highly homogenized UV-light at 365 nm and a table mount. The recommended treatment parameters warrant clinical efficacy and patient safety.
